The University of Port Harcourt, one of
the second-generation Federal Universities, was established first
as a University College in 1975 and was accorded the states of an
autonomous full-fledged University by October 1975. Anxious to see
the University take-off immediately, the Rivers State Government,
by October, 1977, allocated, as temporary site, the premises and
buildings of a newly constructed Technical School in Choba Village;
about 20 kilometers North-West of Port Harcourt. An additional 4000
hectares of land, adjacent to the temporary site and abutting on
the New Calabar River and the East-West Road, was subsequently acquired
as the permanent site. The site has been under programmed development
since 1978.
