The
facilities constructed for the 1988 NUGA Games hosted by the
University of Port Harcourt fell into disrepair for the most
part; these facilities have also become out-dated and grossly
inadequate to host modern games of this magnitude.
To surmount this problem, the present administration of the
University embarked on a relentless pursuit to provide internationally
acclaimed standard facilities for UNIPORT 2004.
New facilities were constructed while existing ones were improved
upon to meet the new challenges posed by new entrants into
the NUGA family.
UNIPORT SPORTS COMPLEX
The new University of Port Harcourt Sports Complex is located
at the Permanent Site of the University. It boosts of standard
facilities for national and even international competitions
in all the fifteen (15) events for NUGA 2004.
GYM
The University constructed an Olympic-size Gymnasium for indoor
sports such as badminton, basketball, judo, taekwando, squash,
offices and accommodation for athletes. It has a capacity
for 2,500 spectators.
ATHLETICS ARENA
This ultra-modern arena consists of: Running tracks (8-lane
synthetic surface), throwing areas – synthetic surface
with cages and stop boards and jumping areas with runways
and pits.
FOOTBALL ARENA
This includes a VIP Lounge, grandstand and covered terraces
with a sitting capacity for 20,000 persons.
SWIMMING POOL
The cutting-edge technology water filtration swimming pool
is 50 meters long and 24 meters wide; with a 10-lane pool,
complete with water treatment facilities, changing areas inside
a standard clubhouse. It also has 24-hour lighting and beautiful
landscaping.
OUTDOOR PITCHES
The outdoor pitches include facilities for Cricket Pitch with
pavilion, 2 Hockey Pitches with pavilion, 2 Handball Pitches,
6 Tennis Courts with pavilion, Volleyball Courts and Football
training pitches.
